Missed the Mark – Creation

This blog may be a bit different than most.  Instead of highlighting just Scripture in the body of the blog, I have chosen a quote from an atheist to explore. Stephen Hawking is regarded as one of the most intelligent men of today’s generation.  Unfortunately, his intelligence and focus missed the mark and therefore missed out on all that God has designed for mankind.

“No one created our universe and no one directs our fate.  This leads me to a profound realization; There is probably no heaven, and no afterlife either.  We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that I am extremely grateful.” – Stephen Hawking

As humans, we are finite beings.  If we can’t explain it in detail, many assume it to be just a fact of existence or coincidental.  Stephen Hawking, though a brilliant man, focused too much on the creation, and not only skipped over the Creator, he out right denies his existence.  Though his first two sentences are incorrect, he does have a point in his third.  One amazing thing about God is that He allows all mankind to marvel at the universe he created. From those who hold an intimate relationship with him, to those who deny his existence.

“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen” – Romans 1:25

I have always found nature to be beautiful, and if you put me in front of anything nature does with water I am always amazed! From thunderstorms, to crashing waves, to icebergs or even waterfalls, I could watch and listen to them for hours.  But to just sit back and only admire God’s art work or craftsmanship, would be foolish.  Imagine my wife made an amazing meal with a beautiful cheesecake dessert. I could stand back and say “wow, that’s a good looking dinner and cheesecake”, and then go about my business without thanking or praising her for her handiwork.  It’s not that my wife or God needs praise, but to only admire the creation without acknowledging the creator is how many ‘Miss the Mark’.

A blog is too short to unpack things further in.  Also, I am not an apologist.  I would highly recommend any that want to explore this idea further, to read ‘Mere Christianity’ by C.S. Lewis.

“As long as you are proud you cannot know God.  A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.” – C.S. Lewis

I’d like to leave you with a few verses that make me sad for all of those, who like Stephen Hawkings, marvel at creation and miss or deny its Creator .

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. ” – Romans 1:20

“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” – John 1:3
